Most people climb into their car each morning, start it up and drive away. As long as the vehicle starts and sounds alright, we don’t consider the small details about the different systems that make up the entire car. However, the moment something begins to sound funny or act funny we become more interested in those minor details and parts.
Boooooooooooost! Yes, we’re almost at the point where we can turn up the boost. But how do you do it? The answer is a boost controller. There are 2 main types of boost controller, a simple manual controller or a more complex electronic boost controller. The former are cheaper and have a strong following in the DSM community, where the Hallman Boost Controller gets some excellent reviews. I opted for the extra features of the Blitz Dual SBC Spec S boost controller and haven’t looked back. Four different boost settings, a boost warning if it gets too high, and very accurate control of your boost has made it a no-brainer for me. The Spec S is also reasonably priced and is currently holding around 1.6bar of boost on my car without any problems.
Many things can produce high HC’s such as too much or even too little fuel, not all cylinders firing, advanced timing, bad catalytic converter, or an air pump that isn’t working. These are the most common causes. Tune up’s can prevent most emission problems. NOX is generally worse on higher compression engines. All engines produce NOX but the use of EGR valves will cool and slow down the burn rate of the engine’s combustion. This considerably lowers NOX values.
Most people have heard of a muffler before, but that doesn’t mean most know what it does! It’s actually there for noise pollution. It takes the noise from the exhaust and keeps it quite by dissipating the energy from the noise.
The catalytic converter recyclers involves collection and separation of the glass-related items. Then the glass is cleaned of contaminants and purified. The it is then crushed and with a raw material mix it is melted in a furnace, creating new glass that can then be blow into new products. Glass that is recycled can also be used, once crushed, in a type of road paving, called glassphalt.
Each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings, and 60 pounds less of air pollution!
The stock intercooler does a decent job up till about 17psi on the stock turbos, after that you would probably notice a significant gain, especially in warmer temperatures, with a nice front mount intercooler. However, keep in mind it will block some of the airflow to the radiator, as well as decreasing response slightly.
Help out and do your part. If your recycling program allows you to recycle coffee cups, make sure they are separated from their lids and end up getting recycled. If your recycling program does not allow for these cups, at least ensure they do not end up tainting the rest of your recycling efforts. Either way, you win.
