Catalytic converters, sometimes referred to as an exhaust gas control device, is an exhaust emission limitation system that transforms exhaust gasses and other pollutants from the internal combustion engine into less hazardous gasses through catalyzing a finite redox reaction. Catalytic converters function in a similar way similar to catalytic tanks used in cars. They force harmful emissions and combustibles to the exhaust system. If the time period between when the exhaust fire starts and the time when the first burning of the fuel occurs is two seconds long the process will not work properly. To allow this process to work it is essential that the catalyst be ignited at exactly the moment that the exhaust fire starts. If the catalyst isn’t ignited at exactly the same time as the exhaust fire, both the oxygen in the air as well as the carbon monoxide contained within the fuel are exposed to one another. This can lead to less-than-perfect combustion. Catalytic converters allow for an extended time between the ignition of catalysts and onset combustion. This allows for more oxygen and carbon dioxide oxidation and results in cleaner emissions.
German scientists discovered catalytic converters during the 1820s. They observed a chemical reaction that led to the melting lead in steel. Researchers found that catalytic converters can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of chemical reactions by releasing hydrogen bonds during chemical reactions, so that they could break apart two chemical compounds without permitting passage. Common catalysts are constructed from rare heavy metals such as platinum, palladium, gold and palladium.
Catalytic converters can be used to control exhaust systems in automobiles and industrial factories.
