You can be ready to hit the ground running when the recession is over if you spend wisely and make use of your extra time now. The usual response to a downturn in the economy is to overreact and stop spending entirely. This not only fuels the recession, but severely hinders your chances of gaining a significant increase in market share. Only you know your true spending limitations. If you’ve done your work up front; improving throughput and eliminating waste, then you should be in a position to keep on spending. This doesn’t mean you spend unreasonably; just that you should continue to spend if you have the resources.
Another time wasting activity popular in manufacturing, MEETINGS, constant, boring unproductive meetings. How many meetings do you have each day with the same employees. For how long? Are you accomplishing more productivity, more loyalty or more money doing all of that talking?
Make use of that extra time for house cleaning. Get rid of all those old parts that couldn’t be repaired. Sell off or recycle raw materials that you no longer have a use for. Organize those items you still use. Re-arrange your warehouse or departments for better work flow. Clean and paint your equipment so it will continue to serve your needs long into the future.
Watch the change in your bottom line, when you change the way you look at your dedicated employees and the way you treat them. You don’t always have to pay top dollar, but you do have to treat people with respect and dignity.
We make small changes in the way we do things. Kaizen is an example of that. Six Sigma and material tubular lean and the resulting process improvement are all about how we do things. Doing things in an improved manner leads to incremental changes not to huge changes, just marginal change. Which for many industries and business is good enough. It affects what, and how, we are doing our jobs and producing results.
You should have the majority of the qualifications necessary to do the job, but if you don’t meet some of the qualifications, you can always work on those in the future. Most of the time, employers are looking for the right personality fit.
You have to recognize the loyalty and be ready to acknowledge it with more than empty words. Growth will happen because the dedication level will grow. They say in business that the customer pays the bills. Very true, but a bad employee or unhappy employee can shut the doors. Food for thought.
